Our neighbors, Megan and Gregg, invited us over shortly after we moved to the area. I walked into their house for the first time and saw this incredible 2 tone painting of their daughter when she was a baby. It’s huge, probably 4ft tall:

I asked about it and got the whole “I studied art back in college” story. I wanted to ask if he would paint one of our baby, but I knew we couldn’t afford custom art and I wasn’t about to ask for charity.

Months later they showed me Modern Bird Studios. They launched it in response to the economic downturn and layoff. Megan put it this way, “The economy sucker punched us about 5 months ago, and we are trying to retaliate with a bitch slap and two big, fat middle fingers.” (source) I guess that explains the inspiration for the name they chose (not really, Gregg explains that here).

So it turns out their prices aren’t scary like I first expected. They start at $169. Let me put that into perspective for you. For our last anniversary I took a photo of me and my wife and used photoshop to overlay it on a bunch of mushy text messages that we had sent each other throughout the year. I then went to imagekind.com and had it printed on a 16″x12″ canvas (my wife loves the frameless look). It cost me $90 just for the canvas and the printing; an artist never touched it. At Modern Bird Gregg spends a few hours on every single piece. You get way more for your money. Check out some of his work:

The are on facebook too:
